Every generation inherits obligations it did not choose: land that must be cared for, systems that must continue, people who must be prepared for useful lives. These obligations are rarely convenient and never fashionable. They are also the measure of a society, and someone must hold them.
Schlitt exists to hold them. That is the whole of our mission, and we have never felt the need to decorate it.
What We Believe
We believe that need is more permanent than circumstance, and that institutions should be built to the scale of the need rather than the mood of the moment. We believe that difficulty is not a reason to decline an obligation; it is usually the reason the obligation is available.
Care at institutional scale looks different from care at personal scale. It is more patient, less demonstrative, and harder to recognize from outside.
We have made our peace with being hard to recognize.

How Purpose Becomes Practice
Purpose that stays on a page is sentiment. Ours is enacted through the disciplines described throughout this site: selectivity about commitments, alignment of capital, governance designed for transition, and a portfolio organized so that each obligation strengthens the others.
Where others see separate businesses, we see one practice repeated in different materials. Restoring a landscape, preparing a young person, and holding a shoreline are the same act at different scales.
The act is not looking away.
The Standard We Accept
We do not ask to be measured by intention. We ask to be measured by presence: by whether we are still there when the season turns, still holding what we agreed to hold, still useful to the people who depend on the systems in our care.
By that standard we are content to be judged, and by no other.
